work sample submission: a list of things that may be considered

The following list is provided to give the applicant an idea of the kind of things that the review committee may look for.  It is not a checklist.  The applicant is not expected to have all of these things in their WORK SAMPLE.  Depending on the type of work in your sample, some of these concepts may not apply.  Consider it a list of things that are likely to be of interest to the reviewers and use it to help you select and compile your work sample.

MATERIALS / Does the work sample:

Use unique materials?

Use commonly used materials in unique ways?

Demonstrate understanding of how a material is installed and/or functions in place?

Demonstrate understanding of how a material works with or does not work with other materials?

Demonstrate understanding prerequisite or complimentary materials?

STRUCTURAL SYSTEM / Does the work sample:

Use structural elements of a material not commonly used as structure?

Use common materials in a unique or innovative structural way?

Demonstrate a use of how structural elements function?

Demonstrate recognition of weaknesses of structural element?

Present a unique way of integrating structure into the design?

MECHANICAL / ELECTRICAL / PLUMBING (MEP) SYSTEMS / Does the work sample:

Propose a unique system?

Propose a unique way of using an existing system?

Proposed a unique way of integrating a system

GENERAL / Does the work sample include:

Information required to properly specify a material or system

Actual written specifications for material or systems proposed in the project

Information about how a material or system contributes to energy conservation

Information on the source of materials or equipment proposed.

Technical details (sections, structural detail) showing how a material or system is to be installed.

A description of why a certain material or system was chosen to be used or proposed.

Information showing that a certain material or system provides specific requirement of an applicable code
